Buddy Services

CCA's Buddy Services Program recruits and trains volunteers to provide supportive services to HIV-positive individuals in New York City who have past or present involvement with the criminal justice system. These services include meeting and escorting jail/prison releasees to their destinations and assisting them during the initial days of release; escorting clients to appointments and assisting with activities of daily living; running errands; assisting children of HIV-infected parents with various needs; and providing social and emotional support to clients.

Volunteer buddies undergo a 20-hour training which covers HIV/AIDS information, skills in interpersonal and confidentiality areas, boundary issues, and the special needs of people involved with the criminal justice system, among other things. Buddies are matched to clients and are supervised and supported by the volunteer coordinator. They receive individual training/supervision, as well as ongoing group training/supervision. Experienced buddies who demonstrate consistent commitment are promoted to a senior buddy position and serve as consultants to the program.

To become a buddy contact the Center for Community Alternatives. For further information call 212-691-1991 or email ccanyc@communityalternatives.org.
