PreCISE (Prevention through Comprehensive Information, Support and Education)
PreCISE serves high risk, substance abusing people who are criminal justice involved, including people on parole and persons sentenced to alternative-to-incarceration programs in New York City. Group services provide drug relapse and HIV prevention education. Acupuncture, provided by a licensed practitioner, is a major component of the program. HIV/AIDS information is also provided through outreach in numerous community settings. Program staff refer clients to drug treatment or harm reduction programs, HIV testing sites, health care, housing and other services as needed.
The program includes specialized support groups, facilitated with assistance from HIV/AIDS peer educators. Education and support on substance abuse, safer sexual practices and related issues is provided through presentations, peer discussions and role-plays to practice newly acquired skills. The support groups increase participants' skills in relapse prevention and harm reduction techniques related to drug use and sexual behavior, increase participants' self confidence, promote healthy behaviors and decrease barriers to abstinence.
