Remember
Tyrone C. Loftin
Pops I can feel the summer breeze
on its way miracle with ice cream all over her face.
It sounds like thunder in spring rain showers
when you yell. Kids running in and out the house
for a chiseled glass of ice tea. The temperature gets hotter
as we walk to the park for a family picnic while you sit in
the shade under the big willow tree feeling the breeze.
The kids swing on swings I see stress leave your face
the relief of pain is gone while I sit in the shade drinking
a cold cup of lemonade. The grill is sizzling food is almost
done. As it gets dark we look in the sky we will remember
these time while your long and gone only but a memory
we will have.
Christmas in the Ghetto
Brittanie McMullen
Mama play the Temptations
as we are waiting
for the presents
Others never got presents
so we're lucky to be waiting
as we hear poppa
singing as he became
a rolling stone
sister talking on the phone
brotha won't leave us alone.
Me, I am waiting
for Christmas
Santa Claus
please, please, please, put me
on ya wish list.
But one problem
Santa don't come
to the ghetto on Christmas!
I AM A BIRD
Lynnet Daniels
I wonder what can I do
I hear the air breezing by my ear
I see other birds flying with me
I want to go high above the others
I AM A BIRD
I pretend that when I am with them
I know I can do better
I feel their soft feathers
I touch my feathers wondering what I am
I worry about my habitat
I cry and cry for days
I AM A BIRD
I understand what I am
I say coo coo coo
I dream of what I can do
I bank my confidence
I hope that I can soar across the seas
I AM A BIRD
